With air travel continuing to grow across India, airlines are reminding passengers to familiarize themselves with baggage rules before heading to the airport. According to a recent Times of India report, while cabin baggage allowances remain broadly similar across carriers, checked baggage limits vary depending on the airline, fare type and route, making it important for travellers to review the applicable rules before flying.

The report notes that most Indian airlines permit passengers to carry one cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg, although specific size restrictions may differ. For domestic travel, carriers such as IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa Air and Alliance Air generally offer a free checked baggage allowance of 15 kg, while Air India’s allowance varies depending on the fare class and route. Several airlines also provide passengers with the option to purchase additional baggage in advance, often at lower rates than those charged at the airport.

Industry observers say a clear understanding of baggage policies can help travellers avoid excess baggage fees, delays at check-in counters and last-minute repacking. The Times of India report highlights that differences in baggage allowances have become increasingly important as airlines introduce multiple fare categories and ancillary services. Passengers are therefore advised to verify baggage entitlements at the time of booking and before commencing their journey.
