The West Bengal government has unveiled plans for a second airport serving Kolkata and three new airfields as part of a major infrastructure push announced in the state budget for 2026-27. Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya informed the Assembly that the proposed second airport is planned at Kalyani in Nadia district, aimed at meeting the region’s growing aviation demand and complementing operations at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The project is expected to support economic growth, improve connectivity and accommodate rising passenger traffic in eastern India.
In addition to the Kalyani airport proposal, the state government has announced plans to develop three new airfields at Cooch Behar, Balurghat and Malda. The budget also provides enhanced financial support for strategic airport projects across the state, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen aviation infrastructure and regional connectivity. Officials believe the new facilities could improve access to northern and border districts while promoting tourism, trade and investment opportunities.
The proposals form part of the government’s wider infrastructure development strategy and will require approvals and coordination with the central government and aviation authorities before implementation. Industry observers note that a second airport for Kolkata has been under discussion for several years, and the latest budget announcement signals renewed momentum behind the project. If realised, the airport and airfield developments could significantly expand West Bengal’s aviation network and support long-term economic growth in the state.
