Air India will commence direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi from August 4, providing a major boost to international connectivity for Assam and the wider Northeast region. Announcing the development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the new services would strengthen the state’s links with the global community and open fresh opportunities for travel, trade and tourism.
The new non-stop flights will make Guwahati one of the few cities in the Northeast with direct air links to the Gulf region. With the addition of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport will have direct international connectivity to four countries — the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Singapore and Bhutan. The services are expected to benefit the large population of Northeast residents working and travelling in the Gulf while also enhancing business and tourism exchanges.
Sarma said the launch comes shortly after European Union member states withdrew restrictive travel advisories related to Assam, a development he described as a positive signal for the state. He added that the government aims to further strengthen Guwahati’s role as a major travel and transit hub for Southeast Asia, with plans to pursue direct air connectivity to Vietnam in the future.
