Five Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers, including a former councillor, were arrested following a clash between supporters of the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) outside Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Friday night. The confrontation erupted when TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee arrived from New Delhi, leading to scuffles, traffic disruptions and heavy police deployment at the airport.
The incident took a more serious turn after individuals allegedly carrying firearms or other weapons were detained near the airport. Abhishek Banerjee later shared videos of the detained persons on social media and questioned how armed individuals could gain access to a high-security airport zone. He described the development as a major security concern and called for a thorough investigation into the apparent lapse.
While TMC leaders alleged that the armed individuals were linked to a plot targeting Banerjee, BJP leaders rejected the accusation and accused the ruling party of politicising the incident. Police have launched an investigation into both the airport clash and the circumstances surrounding the detention of the armed individuals. The arrests of five TMC workers, including former councillor Debasish Banerjee, have further intensified the political controversy surrounding the episode.
