Want to fly high? Do it right in your home town

Jamshedpur: Aspiring pilots of Jamshedpur would no longer have to go to metros for a commercial pilot’s licence. On Monday, flying training institution Alchemist Aviation, which operates out of the Sonari Airport, received the certificate of approval from Director-General of Ci: vil Aviation (DGCA) to conduct flying courses.

This development makes Alchemist Aviation the only flying school in Jharkhand eligible to grant a private pilot licence (PPL) and a commercial pilot licence (CPL).
“We received the certificate of approval valid from May 2018 to May 2023 from the DGCA as per the Aircraft Act 1934 for conducting flying training courses. We applied for approval in 2015 and after a rigorous process of inspection, the DGCA did so. We received the approval letter today (Monday),” said Mrinal Kanti Paul, Alchemist Aviation managing director designated “accountable manager” by the DGCA.

A senior DGCA official, who refused to be quoted, confirmed the approval. “The certificate of approval for Alchemist Aviation was issued on May 22 by G. Rajasekar, joint director-general of DGCA,” said the official.

Paul explained how it would help the region’s aspiring pilots. “Earlier, students spent hefty sums on housing to pursue such courses in metros. This is the best time for a career as a commercial pilot as its demand is soaring due to the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme. Nearly 400 pilots from abroad are serving in flight services in India,” Paul said, adding each flight requires a set of six pilots.

“A commercial pilot can expect a minimum monthly salary of Rs 1.25 lakh after completing an 18-month CPL course for Rs 20 lakh. In case of SC/ST candidates, the entire course fee would be waived (reimbursed through a central scholarship). We will give priority to Jharkhand candidates during admission,” said Capt Parag Goyal, chief instructor at the institute that can take 50 candidates.
