Despite pilot shortage, few students choosing aviation

With unemployment for young people at Canada at record highs, there’s at least one field that is in dire need of new entrants: aviation.
With baby-boomers retiring en masse and increased demand from the developing world, over 97,000 pilots will be needed in Canada and the United States alone over the next two decade.
Despite the need, Marion Harris, the student services coordinator at Coastal Pacific Aviation, which works with the University of the Fraser Valley to offer a Bachelor’s of Business Administration (BBA) in aviation, said that the number of students training to hit the skies is actually dropping.
UFV’s BBA in aviation is one of a handful of programs in Canada that allow students to gain a commercial pilot’s license concurrently with a bachelor’s degree.
“We’re certainly not running at capacity by any stretch,” she said, adding that they currently have 55 students enrolled in the program. “We could take on again as many students as we have right now…But again, there [are] big things holding students back.”
The biggest of which is money—UFV’s four-year aviation degree costs approximately $95,000.
“It’s such a big financial commitment and we are in the firm belief that it has become more difficult for people. There’s probably a lot of people out there who would really be good at something like this…but sometimes the financial end of things is just too big,” she said.
“Yet you’ve got companies like Air Canada retiring a large group of people. You’ve got countries like China and India that have huge demand to the tune of 2,500 pilots a year. You’ve got to create those people from somewhere.”

  1. Really??? Where is the shortage? So many unemployed pilots here. Go hire them. I suspect there exists a nexus between the media and the pilot training industry to print out such news items. Otherwise how come 6000 pilots are sitting at home after reading similar articles in Times of India 4 years back.

  2. IN INDIA Alone 4500 pilot are unemployed. The above universities like
University of the Fraser are making students fool to get money from them. This is the message to all students do not take admission in these Universites.

  3. Please for god sake leave Indian students now . where is the demand for 2500 pilots in India when there are more than 10000+ pilot license holders are jobless and won’t even find a job in the next decade for sure . Please don t market yourself with some demand forecast which boeing has released for next two decades and asking us to believe that will become true . And please don t encourage these kind of topics anymore in this Blog . Be a responsible citizen don t get bogged down with corporate greed ..

  4. These statements are useless! Don’t they see the
Conditions here ? All they need is $95,000 and nobody
Cares about the students after they get their licenses.
If there will be a shortage, then why are Indian CPL holders
Not hired without being type-rated? I know around 50 pilots who
Are rated on Boeing and Airbus and are still unemployed!
Can anybody show us any vacancies for Indian CPL holders in last 6 months ?

  5. There is no pilot shortage. This sort of media releases are aimed use the so called glamour of flying & to create a situation of excess of pilots to keep salaries in check. It further feeds the flying schools to keep them afloat.Who bothers about post Post CPL job prospects which are akin to those after completing a school leaving certificate from any school. Its all a gimmick by aviation industry and the very strong monopoly maintained by their marriage to those moneyed businesses who flirt with them.

  6. They are still not satisfied after creating the fake huge pilot shortfall in 2003-2006,this shows they have no faith in humanity and truth, only thing they are concerned about is to how to fill their coffers by alluring gullible students by creating artificial shortfall of pilots when we have thousands and thousands of pilots sitting unemployed.

  7. New students please go through the DGCA site and check out for the past years since 2005-06 how many computer nos. hav been issued u will be shocked that is proof not jus bullshit by us unemployed pilots look and kingfisher look at Air India if the aviation sector was doing so well i dont think they wld be shutting shop and making cpl holders pay for their own type rating, even after paying $45000 for US CPL we are being made to pay $45000 again for type rating &^%$&^% ridiculous INDIA easily has 10000 unemployed CPL holders and at least 200 unemployed type rated pilots so if u still want to spend close to $$100000 on becoming a pilot(risk) go for it …….according to me there are so many unemployed pilots i think the wages of pilots are gonna drop eg.US a pilot makes $1500 a mth just as much as a guy from MCdonalds hahaha no kidding

  8. also US and Indian school will make u a fool what gaurav Chaudry said all the need is ur Rs55 lacs(CPL+Type) and they dont care for u eg. the 5 to 6 schools that closd down in the US and took the students total money i really feel sorry for those students imagine losing RS.23lacs and nothing you can do about it i jus thank god i got whatever i paid for but not a job still ????????

  9. brothersss go away from this field…… aviation and pilot.. there s not at all shortage of pilot stay away from this career….otherwise ur life wil bcom hellll

  10. oh really ! i am so surprised ….. by the news . if so much of vacancy is there in aviation then show one airlines who are hiring pilots ? why more than 10000 pilots in india are unemployed ? you should first see the reality in aviation and then give your exagerrated reports on aviation instead of fooling young minds of our country.

  11. if there is any shortage of pilots…you should give full clear details of shortage and which company needs pilots …….can you????????? here cpl holders are ready to help them…

  12. This article is so misleading. There is absolutely no shortage of pilots. The shortage is of experienced pilots, which this article has convenient hidden to mislead youngsters and advertise their course. I hope people check the ground realities before believing in such crappe.

  13. The lady in the article is thorougly misleading!!

Pilots like me are looking for other jobs to secure life. no vacancy at all

  14. I AM A STUDENT PILOT LICENSE HOLDER I STUDY IN 11TH STD AND I HAVE OPTED FOR SCIENCE GROUP SEEING THE DISCUSSION I AM A BIT CONFUSED WHAT TO DO CAN ANYONE HELP ME AND GIVE ME A BETTER SOLUTION AND HOW ABOUT AME(AIRCRAFT MAINTAINENCE ENGINEERING) PLS SOMEONE HELP ME OUT

  15. Aircraft engineers research, design, manufacture and maintain aircraft. They work on any and every mechanical aspect of the craft, including airframes, hydraulics and pneumatics, engines and fuel systems and control and communications systems. ” Why is this line inserted in the Article on “Aircraft MAINTENANCE Engineers”?? An AME does no research, does not design and does not maufacture anything. The article should clarify without any ambiguity that an Aircraft Engineer and an Aircraft maintenance Engineer(AME) are two vastly different things. An AME is not even a graduate and this BAMEC can not even get one a Clerk’s job if one fails to find employment with an airline. It is a highly restictive field with a narrow creeer scope and huge exploitation by the employers, who know that one is not qualified to work anywhere else except an airline. If one has any doubt about anything I have written go and ask anybody working in the engineering deptt of any airline and get convinced

  16. Is it true ,Which is mansinoed above or false .Because with my knowledge i came to know rhat there is no shortage of pilots in india.Though if we try we could get a Airline job

  17. i am jus about to enter aviation line but aftr noticing all this i am a bit confused….can any1 tell me about indigo pilot cadet program plzzz???
