{"id":558,"date":"2008-02-28T08:35:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-28T08:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indianaviationnews.net\/avicareers\/?p=558"},"modified":"2008-02-28T08:35:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-28T08:35:00","slug":"international-students-faa-homeland-security-crack-down-on-us-flight-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/2008\/02\/international-students-faa-homeland-security-crack-down-on-us-flight-schools.html","title":{"rendered":"International students: FAA, Homeland Security crack down on US flight schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 0, 0);font-size:180%;\" >T<\/span>housands of foreign student pilots have been able to enroll and obtain pilot licenses from U.S. flight schools, despite tough laws passed in the wake of the 9\/ll attacks, according to internal government documents obtained by ABC News.<br \/>&#8220;Some of the very same conditions that allowed the 9-11 tragedy to happen in the first place are still very much in existence today,&#8221; wrote one regional security official to his boss at the TSA, the Transportation Security Administration.<br \/>&#8220;Thousands of aliens, some of whom may very well pose a threat to this country, are taking flight lessons, being granted FAA certifications and are flying planes,&#8221; wrote the TSA official, Richard A. Horn, in 2005, complaining that the students did not have the proper visas.<br \/>Under the new laws, American flight schools are only supposed to provide pilot training to foreign students who have been given a background check by the TSA and have a specific type of visa.<br \/>But in thousands of cases that has not happened, according to the documents and current and former government officials involved in the program.<br \/>&#8220;TSA&#8217;s enforcement is basically nonexistent,&#8221; said former FAA inspector Bill McNease, in an interview for ABC News.<br \/>The new laws were passed after it was learned that all of the 9\/ll hijackers, including ringleader Mohammed Atta, who were involved in flight operations had trained at U.S. flight schools with improper visas.<br \/>The FAA and Homeland Security are now starting to crack down on a number of flight schools suspected of training students illegally.<br \/>Just last month, agents <a href=\"https:\/\/indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/2008\/01\/flight-school-under-investigation-by-us.html\">raided a flight school<\/a> outside San Diego, Anglo-American Aviation International, as part of an investigation of alleged fraud and misuse of visas.<br \/>A lawyer for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flyaaa.com\">the school<\/a> said the raid only involved a technical, paper-work issue and that the school was &#8220;cooperating&#8221; in the investigation.<br \/>But federal officials say the so-called paper-work is extremely important.<br \/> The DHS said it conducts security threat assessments &#8220;on all non-U.S. citizens seeking flight training.&#8221;<br \/><span style=\"color: rgb(153, 0, 0);\">27\/02\/08 Brian Ross, Vic Walter and Eric Longabardi \/ABC News<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of foreign student pilots have been able to enroll and obtain pilot licenses from U.S. flight schools, despite tough<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"colormag_page_container_layout":"default_layout","colormag_page_sidebar_layout":"default_layout","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-558","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/558","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=558"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/558\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=558"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=558"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=558"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
