{"id":1524,"date":"2011-11-09T02:26:26","date_gmt":"2011-11-09T02:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/?p=1524"},"modified":"2011-11-09T02:26:26","modified_gmt":"2011-11-09T02:26:26","slug":"despite-pilot-shortage-few-students-choosing-aviation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/2011\/11\/despite-pilot-shortage-few-students-choosing-aviation.html","title":{"rendered":"Despite pilot shortage, few students choosing aviation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>W<\/strong><\/span>ith unemployment for young people at Canada at record highs, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s at least one field that is in dire need of new entrants: aviation.<br \/>\nWith baby-boomers retiring en masse and increased demand from the developing world, over 97,000 pilots will be needed in Canada and the United States alone over the next two decade.<br \/>\nDespite the need, Marion Harris, the student services coordinator at Coastal Pacific Aviation, which works with the University of the Fraser Valley to offer a Bachelor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s of Business Administration (BBA) in aviation, said that the number of students training to hit the skies is actually dropping.<br \/>\nUFV\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s BBA in aviation is one of a handful of programs in Canada that allow students to gain a commercial pilot\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s license concurrently with a bachelor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s degree.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re certainly not running at capacity by any stretch,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said, adding that they currently have 55 students enrolled in the program. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We could take on again as many students as we have right now\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6But again, there [are] big things holding students back.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nThe biggest of which is money\u00e2\u20ac\u201dUFV\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s four-year aviation degree costs approximately $95,000.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s such a big financial commitment and we are in the firm belief that it has become more difficult for people. There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s probably a lot of people out there who would really be good at something like this\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6but sometimes the financial end of things is just too big,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Yet you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got companies like Air Canada retiring a large group of people. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got countries like China and India that have huge demand to the tune of 2,500 pilots a year.
