{"id":1246,"date":"2010-08-24T07:13:17","date_gmt":"2010-08-24T07:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/?p=1246"},"modified":"2010-08-24T07:13:17","modified_gmt":"2010-08-24T07:13:17","slug":"india-backs-down-on-foreign-pilots-bar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indianaviationnews.net\/careers\/2010\/08\/india-backs-down-on-foreign-pilots-bar.html","title":{"rendered":"India backs down on foreign pilots bar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">New Delhi\/Singapore\/Manila:<\/span> India\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s aviation authorities have backed down from removing foreign pilots from the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s commercial airlines for another year as demand for air travel recovers and local private carriers once again look to expand.<br \/>\nWhile India has about 3,000 novice pilots awaiting jobs with commercial airlines, India\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s domestic supply of veteran pilots \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who have enough experience to serve as captains on flights \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is insufficient for the rapidly growing aviation sector.<\/p>\n<p>India\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dependence on experienced foreign pilots reflects the problems facing many other Asian carriers, which are facing intensifying competition as airlines ramp up capacity in response to soaring economic growth and demand for air travel.<br \/>\nAfter waves of pilot layoffs during the global economic downturn, regional air travel has bounced back and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153there are many airlines that are hiring aggressively\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, says one airline official.<br \/>\nIndian airlines look set for the biggest problem as they grapple with growing pains exacerbated by fits of economic nationalism that has prompted politicians to declare that Indian skies should belong to Indian pilots as soon as possible.<br \/>\nIndia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s commercial fleet has grown from 100 aircraft flying for two airlines in the early 1990s to nearly 400 aircraft flying for 10 airlines today.
