AAI plans to recruit 400 air traffic controllers soon
New Delhi: Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, the busiest in the country, will soon get respite from the perennial shortage of air traffic controllers.
In one of its major hiring drives in a long time, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to recruit more than 400 air traffic control officers (ATCOs), who are expected to be deployed at airports around the country in the next six months. Sources in the AAI said a large number of ATCOs from the new lot will be deployed at the Delhi and Mumbai airports.
On an average, the Delhi airport handles 1,000 flights a day, which includes both scheduled flights and general aviation that includes chartered flights and helicopters. However, the number of ATCOs handling this traffic is around 350, who work in shifts. The problem is particularly acute during peak morning and evening hours due to bunching of flights. With the number of flights increasing each day, the present manpower will fall short.
