Cash-strapped flying club grounded for years

Guwahati: It may be quite sometime before the wait of the flying aspirants, seeking the revival of the Assam Flying Club, located at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport is over.

Formed in 1958, the club enjoyed the distinction of being the lone flying club of northeast India to issue private and commercial license to pilots till it started facing hurdles in the early 90s.
The Cessna 152 and Pushpak MK-1 trainer aircrafts, available with the flying club, have been stranded for over 10 years now.
“A decision has been taken to merge the Assam Flying Club located at Guwahati with the new flying club set to come up at Lilabari Airport at North Lakhimpur district in upper Assam. The Union ministry for development of the North Eastern Region has taken the initiative to open a new flying club at Lilabari. The process of opening the new club is on,” said Gautam Das, secretary of the Assam Flying Club at Guwahati.
